Founded over 2760 years ago on the seven hills near the banks of the River Tiber, Rome is one of the most famous ancient cities in the world. Today, Rome operates like any other modern European city, but its vast number of monumental ruins, artistic treasures and architectural wonders make it one of the biggest outdoor museums on earth. Also home to the world's smallest country, the Vatican, Rome is completely unique, a place where religion and history blend effortless to create a city that dazzles, surprises and inspires its visitors time and time again.
Transport to Rome
Rome is the beast of all the Italian cities. With impressive landmarks on every corner, Rome is truly an open-air museum. While it is not possible to walk to everything in Rome, many of the most popular sights are concentrated within Rome’s historic center, which makes walking the best way to explore the Eternal City. Rome also has a great public transport system of buses, trams and metro.
Rome is very well served by rail from most of Italy's larger cities. This makes visiting Rome very easy to pair with other Italian gems such as Venice, Florence, Milan and Naples. Rome has two large airports with many direct flights from European cities including London, Amsterdam, Munich, Prague, Vienna and even Budapest. There are also direct intercontinental flights from New York, Montreal and Toronto to name but a few.
